Biochar

Baguio and Jardine Engineering Corporation jointly operate a Biochar Production Plant at Tuen Mun Eco Park, using

Thermal decomposition process (Pyrolysis) to process yard waste into biochar. This recycled product, resulting from combustion, possesses a porous structure, adsorption capacity, and moisture retention ability, making it suitable for use as an agricultural soil amendment and for carbon sequestration. It can also be utilized in various fields such as building materials. The quality of biochar is determined by its density; the more porous it is, the higher the quality, categorized into Basic, Premium, and Enhanced Premium grades.

Features and Benefits

  • Porous Structure: Possesses high adsorption capacity, enhancing soil moisture retention.
  • pH Adjustment: Neutralizes soil pH, reducing carbon and ammonia emissions.
  • Promotes Microbial Growth: Provides living space for microbes, increasing the stability and diversity of soil microbiota.
  • Enhances Nutrient Availability: Increases the availability of organic nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium, and calcium in the soil.
  • Reduces Environmental Pollution: Adsorbs moisture and nutrients, reducing soil and water pollution.

Uses

  • Soil Amendment: Effectively retains soil moisture and nutrients, neutralizes soil pH, and enhances the growth of soil microorganisms, promoting crop growth and soil fertility.
  • Composting Accelerator: Speeds up the composting process and minimizes odor.
  • Air Quality Improvement: Reduces the emissions of carbon and ammonia (NH₃), helping to mitigate climate impact.
  • Building Materials: Used as a component in building materials, providing insulation and improving physical properties.
