As the city's leading environmental services provider, Baguio leverages green technology, partnering with Jardine Engineering Corporation to operate the Tuen Mun Pilot Biochar Production Plant in Eco Park. This project uses pyrolysis with high temperature under oxygen-limited conditions to transform wooden waste, pallets, and bamboo into high-value biochar—delivering a sustainable solution that drives circular economy.

Characteristics of Biochar

Biochar’s status as a high-value material is fully attributed to its unique physical and chemical structures:

  • Porous Structure: Features a highly porous structure with a large specific surface area, functioning as countless microscopic reservoirs and microbial habitats. This structure effectively retains moisture and nutrients, and promotes microbial activity, thereby enhancing soil fertility and crop yields.
  • High Adsorption Capacity: Strongly locks in moisture and environmental nutrients while efficiently adsorbing impurities and hazardous substances. This property delivers exceptional practical value in environmental engineering applications such as pollutant removal, purification, and deodorization.
