Glass Bottle

According to the Environmental Protection Department's "Hong Kong Solid Waste Monitoring Report 2022," Hong Kong discards 175 tons of glass bottles into landfills daily, accounting for 1.6% of the total urban solid waste. Glass is an inert material that does not decompose naturally, thus indiscriminate disposal of glass bottles not only occupies limited landfill space but also wastes valuable resources. Recycling glass bottles can reduce landfill pressure and stimulate the growth of a green economy. This approach not only helps protect the environment but also enhances overall community awareness of environmental protection, steering Hong Kong towards a more sustainable future.

Benefits of Glass Recycling

  • Relieves pressure on landfills and reduces the use of land in country parks;
  • Decreases the costs associated with the disposal and landfilling of waste glass;
  • Reduces consumption of Earth's precious resources;
  • Lowers carbon emissions;
  • Enhances community awareness of environmental protection.

Recyclable Glass Bottles:

Resource Recycling

To achieve waste reduction targets, Baguio has been appointed by the Environmental Protection Department as the glass management contractor for Hong Kong Island (including the Outlying Islands). Baguio is committed to actively promoting and encouraging the clean recycling of glass bottles and containers, providing glass bottle recycling and processing services to citizens and business institutions.

Service Targets:

Includes public places, government facilities, bars and restaurants, commercial offices, shopping centers, residential buildings, and schools.

Glass Recycling Process

Baguio's Waste Glass Bottle Recyling Plant, located in Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun, is responsible for sorting recycled waste glass bottles to remove non-glass materials, and processing them through crushing and grinding to transform them into recyclable glass shards sized between less than 6mm and 20mm.

Future of Recycled Glass Bottles

Glass, primarily composed of silicon dioxide, is a natural resource similar to common sand. Typically, glass does not pollute the environment or affect human health, making it highly suitable for reuse and recycling. Recycled glass bottles can have various future uses:

  • Rebottling for Reuse: Recycled glass bottles can be cleaned and sterilized for reuse in packaging beverages or other products.
  • Remanufactured into New Bottles or Other Glass Products: Recycled glass can be crushed and melted to manufacture new glass bottles or other glass products.
  • Substitute for Sand and Other Natural Resources: Crushed glass can replace sand and be used in building materials such as eco-friendly tiles, concrete, road paving, and even in land reclamation projects.
  • Transformation into Valuable Products: Glass bottles and containers can be converted into green products, such as environmentally friendly sandbags or upcycled artistic creations.
